New York Living

donna Gaudio MarchettaI was living in a New York studio apartment, my first year out of college and scheduled an interview with a small architectural firm downtown for a junior designer position.
The interview was going well until I became frozen with fear by the site of a "dead cockroach" inside the spiral jaws of my design portfolio! My mind began to race...how did that creature get there...it wasn't there last night when I looked thru it...cockroaches I don't have cockroaches in my apartment...what am I going to do...should I just close the book on this interview, apologize and walk out...are you sure it's a roach...look again!!!! With one last glance I was assured that it indeed was a roach and thought just pretend it's a bad dream...don't look at it and it won't be there!
So with that I remained in total eye contact with the "head architect" who was conducting the interview, who just so happens to be the owner of the firm. He had to have seen it too, but he was either very kind not to totally humiliate me, or a true New Yorker where nothing bothers them. Needless to say I worked there for two years with never a word of the roach or my interview.
