Gab-fest

Submitted by anon

I had been out of the workforce sor some time and I was understandably nervous about everything. I had applied for a clerical job at a local company and was surprised and pleased that I got a call the next day for an interview. When I arrived at the office for my interview, I had to fill out an application with the whole office staff seemingly watching me. When the hiring manager came to get me for the interview, walk past a couple of rows of employees' desks and it felt like I was walking a gauntlet, which unnerved me even more. By the time I sat down for the actual interview, I was so flustered that every time I was asked a question, I started to babble. My answers got progressivly longer and made less and less sense with each question, and I couldn't seem to make myself stop talking. Finally, the hiring manager abruptly put a stop to the interview by asking me "Do you always talk this much?" to which I replied "yes" (finally a short answer!). We sat there, mercifully silent, for what seemed like an eternity, while he scanned my application and resume. Then, for no good reason, he said slowly "Well, I think I'd like to give you the opportunity to join us" to which I blurted "Why?" to which I added, "I really do always talk this much". With that, I leapt up, shook the startled man's hand and fled, red-faced, out the door, past the watching group and down the hall to the elevator and out to my car. When I got to my car, I realized that I had left my expensive prescription sunglasses at the desk where I had filled out the application, so I reluctantly made my way back up to the office. When I opened the office door, all heads swiveled from where the manager was standing stood, excitely relating what happened in interview, to me standing there. I stopped in the doorway and they watched, fascinated, as I squared my shoulders, strode over to the desk, retrieved the glasses and giving an airy little wave, turned and left without a word.

I could hear them laughing all the way down the hall and into the elevator...
